‘We Are Going To Have A Great Time’ – Manu Dibango Promises Ahead Of Isaiah Katumwa Concert

Jazz legend Manu Dibango is in town to team up with Ugandan legend Isaiah Katumwa to celebrate the life of another legend Hugh Masekela as the world marks international Jazz Day today. They are joined by another multi-talented and multi-award winning artist Siphokazi from South Africa where they promise to thrill Jazz enthusiasts with some classy acts this evening at Kampala Serena Hotel

The celebrated jazz phenomenon who arrived in the country on Saturday from Paris is here for the first time and has promised to go all out in tonight`s annual Isaiah Katumwa concert at Kampala Serena Hotel.

“It is going to be a great evening and I promise everyone that we shall have a great time” Said the 84-year old legend whose music career spans 60 years.

Manu arrived in the country on Saturday night and was welcomed by Katumwa himself

Isaiah Katumwa (2nd L) says it’s going to be a celebration of African Jazz and he is happy to host Manu Dibango (C) and Siphokazi (In pink). On the panel were also representatives from sponsors

The event which is sponsored by Johnnie Walker also doubles as a tribute to the late Hugh Masekela who passed on early this year and falls on International Jazz Day which is marked the world over. This, therefore is even more reason to celebrate the genre. Katumwa who was very excited to see the artiste he said he looked up to while growing up described his coming to Uganda as a ‘great relief` after waiting long for it to happen.

“We are here to pay respect to one of the greatest and everyone should enjoy the show. I can only promise a good show tonight,” said Dibango this morning at a press conference in Serena.

Manu Dibango says he was a Johnnie Walker ambassador for four years and is glad to work with them once again

When asked about Michael Jackson and Rihanna copying elements of his music, he said he doesn’t care about the legalities but in fact, on the contrary, is happy about the whole saga.

“It means they are also listening to our music”. He said.

Katumwa and Dibango are also joined by multiple award-winning South African Afro-soul songstress Siphokazi Maraqana who will also grace the stage tonight.

She hailed Masekela`s influence on her 12-year-old music career. She also expressed how blessed she felt sharing a stage with Dibango and Katumwa after being the only artiste invited by Katumwa despite South Africa having many other stars.

Siphokazi couldn’t hide her excitement as she expressed her gratitude for being invited to honor the late Hugh Masekela

“He was like a teacher to me and I learned so many things from him. I feel great pleasure in playing on the same stage as my big brothers Katumwa and Dibango. It’s my first time here and I hope to come back in future,” said Siphokazi.

Entrance to the show is Shs150,000 for regular tickets and Shs3m for a table. The show starts at 7pm.
